The Drop Off Fishing reports 4/23 to 4/26 Report posted by Capt. Fran Verdi of the The Drop Off on 4/27/08
4/23/08 Fishing in the 4/24/08 Capt. Fran was on Fish the Drop off scouting out new areas to fish in the bay and the water was about 63 degrees. I was a nice day to be on the water and the trip turned up some nice size bluefish. It looks like blues have invaded the bay area around Beach Haven and Tuckerton. 4/25/08 Had no takers on the open boat for Friday but Capt. Fran called some friends that wanted to get out and dunk the lines for the first time. Water temp was still in the 60 degrees and the group wanted Striper or Black Drum. We took turns reeling in Blues in the 5 to 10 pound range. When it was Capt. Fran turn on the rods it was not a tap tap tap but a straight pull and the line was ripping of the reel. The fight was on and the 20mins later the first Black Drum was boated for the season. It was weighted in at the Chum Bucket on route 9 in West Creek. The official weight was 22 pounds 10 oz. What a fish for the bays behind Beach Haven. 4/26/08 Capt. Fran had added some shared boat trips to the schedule for May to include some Saturdays. Brett Boyanowski, Eian Hattersley, and David Kugel, all joined Capt. Fran on the trip. The fishing started out slow with the group trying out the areas that I scouted out the day before. Several blues hit the lines but only one was landed. It was about 5 pounds. By mid morning we had to make a move and that is what we did. Tide was coming in and we moved closer to the inlet and the water temp dropped to about 58 degrees. The wind started to really blow and in would say that it was a good 20 knot but the wanted to fish. The second spot was move of the day. Fishing with clam blues took the bait all day. With every fish landed getting bigger and bigger. The blues turned out is slammer blues all in the 10 pound range. At times we had three fish on lines going every witch way it was crazy. Brett was the high hook of the day with 7 slammer blues boated. I never had the time to switch to wire leader every time I went to get it there was another fish on. We lost several due too chewing the leader of 50 pounds. The ride home was a wet one with wind blowing 20 to 30 knot and good three footers the
